Basic Chaplaincy Courses

102 – JAIL SAFETY & SECURITY

An in-depth look at the importance of rules and regulations in the jail setting and the reasons for them.

104 – DEATH NOTIFICATION

A ‘How To’ course on one of the toughest aspects of Chaplaincy.  This course will cover making a notification, response procedures and protocol for SIDS deaths, and using appropriate conduct in the jail as well as with law enforcement families and the community.

106 – Substance Abuse

This course covers a recurring problem within the law enforcement world, the community and with inmates.  Information about resources are available.

108 – Sensitivity & Diversity

This course will help Identify, define and addresses backgrounds, beliefs and perspectives when serving different cultures.

110 – MINISTRY TO INMATES

This class focuses on helping the inmates deal with the frustrations of incarceration, providing spiritual guidance for inmates and their families.

112 – COUNSELING TECHNIQUES

114 – CHAPLAIN AT THE CRIME SCENE

This class discusses a whole host of protocols and guidelines for Chaplains who may be called to a crime scene.

SUMMARY OF BASIC CLASSES

These Seven Classes make up half of the courses necessary for certification as a “Basic Certified Chaplain” by the Sheriff’s Chaplaincy Conference.  The other seven will be presented at Next Year’s Conference.

202 – GANG ACTIVITY

In this class, you will learn how to identify, define and diffuse gangs in jail.

204 – MINISTRY TO CORRECTIONS OFFICERS

This class will present and discuss how to build a relationship, trust and sensitivity when working with Correctional Officers.

206 – CHAPLAIN’S ROLE IN A HOSTAGE SITUATION

This course will explore the procedures at a hostage scene, protocols, dynamics and diffusion techniques in hostage situations.

208 – OFFICER SUICIDE

One of the most difficult things for a Chaplain and a law enforcement agency is when an Officer commits suicide.  Here, we will address the high statistical issues of law enforcement suicide, prevention and response.

210 – DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

This course covers procedures in counsel, sensitivity and family notification when dealing with Domestic Violence situations and victims.

212 – PTSD

This class will present how to identify the signs and symptoms of PTSD and techniques for helping prevent it through the use of critical incident defusings and debriefings.

214 – CHILD ABUSE

This course will define child abuse (physical, emotional and sexual) as well as ministry to the victims, ministering to perpetrators, reporting child abuse, what the law requires us to do, where to find child abuse resources and referral information and safe child policy guidelines.

SUMMARY OF SENIOR CLASSES

These Seven Classes make up half of the courses necessary for certification as a “Senior Certified Chaplain” by the Sheriff’s Chaplaincy Conference.  The other seven will be presented at Next Year’s Conference.  Basic Certification is required before applying for Senior Certification.
